South African Hand-Greeting
“Aweh” is a way to say hi in South Africa. Another way is using your hands, making the Shaka sign – you’re surely familiar with the sign from the movies – you use your thumb and little finger extended while the three middle fingers are kept in the palm of your hand – the sign that is often associated with surfers.
In Hawaii, the Shaka sign is used to express respect or admiration, while in South Africa, it has a more casual meaning. As this Reddit user explains, you can use it anytime, anywhere and with anyone, and they’ll understand what you mean. We never knew they used this hand gesture in South Africa!
