A Sign of Good Luck
We’ve seen how different gestures and their meanings can be in different parts of the world. But what do you think it means to cross your fingers? In many places, it’s a sign of good luck – including here in the U.S., when you wish someone good luck and cross your fingers. In Sweden, however, it means you’re lying.
So what do Swedes do when they want to have good luck then? Well, they place their thumb inside their fist. The explanation of the gesture according to the belief is that it captures and traps the bad luck of evil spirits and destroys it, so you will have good luck. It makes sense, in a way. We’ve never considered where crossing your fingers as a sign of good luck comes from.
