Scottish New Year
Every country celebrates the new year a bit (or a lot) differently. In Scotland, they refer to New Year’s eve as Hogmanay, and they have a unique tradition. The first person that should enter the house after midnight represents the luck the house would have that year. Therefore, they must bring a symbolic gift, such as coal.
If the first person who enters the house brings a bit of coal, that’s good luck. However, not every gift is acceptable. Gingers bring bad luck. The rules of this tradition vary from one region to another, but this is a national tradition. Here in the U.S., we don’t really have any special tradition, except party with your friends or family.
