Irish Cheering
Do you say “mazal tov” when someone breaks a glass? No? Don’t give us that look – it’s not unheard of! In some places around the world, it’s common to cheer when drops and breaks something, such as a glass or a plate, mostly when it’s in a public setting such as a pub or restaurant. In Ireland, they yell “yeoooo” and clap.
We wouldn’t say it’s a cultural habit in the U.S., but it’s definitely not unheard of! I’m not sure where this practice comes from, but it happens. When someone breaks a glass by accident, people around would cheer and clap, and turn a bad situation around. That way, the person who dropped the glass wouldn’t feel as bad. Is that the sentiment behind this?
