Parking Dibs in Chicago
This isn’t much of a quirk, but a clever way to ensure you’ll have a parking space! In many places around the world, mostly big metropolitan cities such as Chicago, finding a parking space can be quite difficult, not to say impossible. In some places, you might go in circles for what feels like hours before finding a spot.
As this person explains, they’ve developed this local practice of saving parking spots: calling dibs! When you see a free space, you place a junky piece of furniture there, to claim it as your own. Instead of having a friend stand in the freezing cold to save a parking space (and it gets pretty cold in Chicago), you simply place a piece of old furniture.
