When in doubt and without a valid argument, just claim it’s the law. Children know you have to follow laws, so it always works pretty well. Occasionally they’ll question it, but the older kids will play along, especially if they get the perk of the top bunk! You can try the classic, “You’re not old enough,” but that often results in tears.

Still, as a kid, I know I would have snuck into the top bunk at some point and kept a wary eye out for cops busting down the door. After a few times, I’d get a little complacent. Eventually, I might start to believe that laws aren’t real… Parents, we need to be careful with this lie!
