#35: The Dimple Effect
We take it for granted that golf balls have that small, repetitive pattern of dimples all over them. These dimples started appearing on golf balls in the mid-1800s. It was discovered that dimples help the velocity of a ball as it travels through the air. The science behind golf ball dimples is surprisingly fascinating, but most of us have a much simpler question.
How many dimples, exactly, does a golf ball have? The answer isn’t cut and dry. Depending on the manufacturer, golf balls can have anywhere between 300 and 500 dimples, according to Golf Magazine. On average, golf balls have about 336 dimples. Can you believe that many indentations are on one tiny ball? Pretty wild.
