#74: A Lost Art Form
Have you ever heard of ski ballet? Don’t feel bad if you haven’t. This once-iconic Olympic sport has faded into obscurity for whatever reason. Ski ballet is exactly what you think it is: a form of ballet performed on skis. While there’s no clear origin story for ski ballet, it definitely had its 15 minutes of fame in the 70s and 80s.

It was a full-fledged Olympic sport until 2000, which seems like a very long time for a sport that most of us barely remember. People like to talk smack about ski ballet, but it’s basically figure skating but on skis. Competitors would do amazing ballet moves while strapped into their skis for a two-minute nail-biting, jaw-dropping routine. It’s actually incredibly impressive. We recommend looking it up on YouTube!
