#31: A Hole-in-One…on the Moon?
This sports fact is out of this world– literally. It’s a little-known fact that golf has been played on a field that is not of our world. Astronaut Alan Shepard played golf on the moon in 1971. This was no regular publicity stunt, though. Alan Shepard was an avid golfer here on Earth, so he had a unique gold club designed especially for the change in gravity on the Moon.

The thing is, NASA had no idea that Shepard was planning on pulling this stunt once Apollo 14 touched ground on the Moon. Shepard smuggled his special golf club onto the spaceship, and NASA had no idea until he pulled it out in space. Once the crew’s walkabout was done, Shepard saw his chance to hit a few in space. He pulled out the club and made two successful shots. What other golf fanatic can say they’ve golfed on the Moon?
