#73: Diving High
Many of us often forget that diving is an Olympic sport. On top of that, it’s recognized as a sport worldwide. But where did this very niche sport get its start? Well, it started to gain traction as an artistic form of sport in Europe during the early 19th century. From there, it really took off once the first-ever championship happened.
This fateful diving competition happened in the UK. The Championships of Scotland were held in 1889 and included competitions in a surface dive and a six-foot dive. Pretty risqué, if you ask us. From there, diving really took off as a sport. More and more athletes were adding their own elegant and elaborate twists to their diving style. Because of this, the sport has evolved into what we know it today.
