#33: A Cornfused Choice
They say good intentions pave the road to hell, and the story about corn subsidies was a perfect example of that pitch. What started as a noble effort to promote cleaner fuel alternatives and reduce environmental impact drove us straight into a disastrous labyrinth of unintended consequences. As ethanol flooded the energy market, our cars paid the price. Lower fuel efficiency became the norm, forcing us to open our wallets more frequently at the gas station.
But the story didn’t stop there. With corn diverted towards ethanol production, food corn was left in short supply. Suddenly, your beloved taco, morning cereal, and even that sweet cornbread became victims of skyrocketing prices. Perhaps they should work towards a future combining good intentions with wisdom next time. This way, we can avoid the dangers when our well-meaning plans go wrong.
