#16: Tom from MySpace
If you’re of a certain age, you definitely remember Tom from MySpace. The iconic profile picture of Tom sitting in front of a whiteboard was the first foray into early social media for many people. But, the social media landscape of today looks vastly different from the personalized pages and playlists of early 2000s MySpace.
When many elder millennials and Gen Xers joined MySpace, it felt like a whole new world full of creativity and connection. Today, many of us are tired of what social media has become. Instead of organic discovery, it’s algorithms and ads. Instead of open discussions that foster learning, it’s targeted misinformation and biased hot takes. To a lot of people, it seems that social media is tearing people further apart rather than connecting them. What do you think?
