#34: When Good Intentions Hurt
When this company decided to include people with disability in their team, they allowed them to experience a sense of purpose, structure, and meaning. These jobs contributed to a more inclusive society, aiming for equal employment opportunities and promoting diversity. However, as the government enforced changes requiring these individuals to be paid minimum wage, the company found itself at a crossroads.
A crippling realization hit: the company couldn’t afford to compensate everyone accordingly. The heartbreaking consequence was a severe reduction in the number of people allowed to work, leaving only a fraction of the beneficiaries with this invaluable opportunity. The sudden deprivation of work left the others confused, unable to comprehend the abrupt loss of their newfound purpose.
