#22: Lucky Number Three
“SOS” is the universal signal for distress. It was established in 1906 as the official Morse code distress signal by the International Radio Telegraphic Convention. To this day, it’s a signal that most people recognize. In case you need a refresher, the Morse code for “SOS” is three dots, three dashes, and three dots.

Many people interpret a sequence of three sounds to be a universal sound of distress because of this standard code. So, if you’re lost in the wilderness or trying to signal for help by making noise with a physical object, make three identical sounds in quick succession. For example, hit rocks together three times, fire a gun three times, or clap three times.
