#8: The Steagles
Have you ever heard of a football team named “The Steagles?” It’s okay if you haven’t. This team only existed for one year. During World War II, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles lost so many players to the military draft that they were compelled to combine forces for the 1943 season.
Officially, this combined team was named “Phil-Pitt Combine,” but fans simply called them “The Steagles.” We think that’s a catchier name, anyway. It may come as a surprise that professional sports were still played during such a hard time in history. However, President Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that professional sports served as a much-needed distraction and morale boost for Americans during the war.
