The King of Scotland had major feelings about golf and football (aka soccer to us Americans). As a result, he informed his subjects. King James II first banned golf and football in 1457 because he was concerned it distracted men from practicing their archery. The two kings who took power after King James II of Scotland obviously loved being haters because they continued the bans. 

King James III renewed the ban in 1471, and King James IV kept the bad vibes going until 1491. (Sidenote: They were very creative with royal names back in the day.) The story goes that King James IV lifted the ban on the two sports because he took up golfing himself. It’s funny how it becomes okay once the person in power is a fan, huh?
