#36: A Turnover Toaster
So, we’ve introduced you to the innovative pop-up toaster. Now we’d like to show off its earlier predecessor, the “turnover” toaster. This early version of our beloved toaster required a lot more maintenance and attention. This electrical machine required the user to manually turn the toast over halfway through. You see, this toaster only toasted one side of bread at a time.
This model is from the 1930s. Even though the pop-up toaster existed around this time, it was not widespread or as affordable as this “turnover” version. You will be terrified to know that this early toaster didn’t have an “off” switch. If it was plugged in, it was on and hot. Imagine leaving for work in the morning, only to wonder if you left this thing plugged in!
