Asking if someone needs something is nice, but it puts a lot of pressure on them. They not only have to come up with something or admit they don’t know, but they might feel guilty about asking for whatever they need. Rephrasing it changes everything.

“What can I do for you?” makes it much more personal and takes the pressure off. A simple “nothing” is acceptable when it’s asked like that, and oftentimes, a torrent of emotion will follow, which is probably what they needed anyway. I’m going to start phrasing it this way because I know how much I’d appreciate it if someone did this for me.
