#13: Hiya, Neighbor
Knowing all of our neighbors in the building seems like an odd concept to some of us; can you imagine knowing all the residents in your town? That’s what life is like for the residents of Whittier, Alaska. Whittier is a unique and remote town where all 200 residents live in a single building. This remarkable structure, known as the Begich Towers, serves as a condominium-style complex that houses not only homes but also schools, a post office, a police station, and even a small grocery store.

What makes Whittier even more exceptional is its sole land access: a 2.5-mile-long tunnel that runs through a mountain. This tunnel is the lifeline of the town, providing the only road connection to the rest of Alaska. Whittier’s isolation and its residents’ communal living arrangements undoubtedly make it one of the most intriguing and remote communities in the United States.
