#39: Hans Blix
The former UN Chief United Nations weapons inspector, Hans Blix, found himself at the center of an international storm when he challenged the narrative of WMD in Iraq. In the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War, Blix meticulously led inspection teams through Iraq, diligently searching for evidence of WMDs as mandated by the UN Security Council.
At the time, his findings contradicted the assertions of the U.S. and U.K. governments, who insisted on the existence of such weapons as a justification for the war. Blix’s measured and cautious approach was met with skepticism and ridicule by politicians and media outlets advocating for military action. Ultimately, the invasion revealed no WMDs, vindicating Blix’s assessments.
