#2: Too Good To Be True
Humans have adopted plenty of strange and unusual medical practices that are praised as game changers, only to be completely shunned a few generations later. One example of a misguided medical practice is the infamous lobotomy. Nowadays, we associate lobotomies with the unethical treatment of patients with mental illness. However, it didn’t start out that way.
When lobotomies were widespread in the early- to mid-1900s, people celebrated it as a miracle surgery. By severing connections in the brain, doctors believed they could “cure” mental illness and other issues. Things quickly devolved, however, because lobotomies started being performed on people without their consent. On top of that, there were a lot of red flags showing that lobotomies were actually pretty harmful. Thankfully, lobotomies are no longer performed in the US, but they went on for way longer than necessary.
