An Intersex Experience
According to Planned Parenthood, intersex is a term that encompasses various situations where a person is born with anatomy that doesn’t strictly fit into the “male” or “female” categories. There are different ways that someone can be intersex, and this storyteller shared their experience. They were born intersex due to a chromosome translocation, where a chromosome breaks and attaches to another. They have X, Y, and hybrid chromosomes, so they don’t fit into a typical chromosomal profile.
As a result, their puberty experience was really unique. They started developing like a girl, but they don’t have complete ovaries. Their body also didn’t produce any testosterone, so they were at puberty-level development until they started taking testosterone as an adult. Their doctor said they would basically go through puberty and menopause at the same time while taking testosterone.
