A quick internet search will hastily tell you that there is no shortage of diet plans or workout programs to choose from. All the plans promise results, so what is a person to do? It can be overwhelming, nearly paralyzing, to figure out what is right for you. However, it’s much easier than an entire program or restrictive diet. In fact, it’s simple; start small.
So many programs offer unrealistic results by way of restrictive measures. While those programs may produce some results, even remarkable results at times, the programs are often unsustainable. The reason these programs don’t always stick is due to the number of changes happening at once. While there are individuals that can stick to the plan long term and reap continued success, the majority of us are wired a little differently. We are creatures of habit and you know what they say about old habits? They die hard.

To truly make a change to your health and fitness, start small by finding a habit to change for the better. Once that change starts to feel natural, it’s time to layer on top of that newfound success. For example, do you have a habit of slugging an afternoon soda to get through the post-lunch fog? While that soda can be incredibly satisfying, it isn’t doing your body any nutritional favors. Ideally, you would exchange that soda for water, but it’s not always that easy, is it? Perhaps it’s that caffeine boost that you crave. If that is the case, consider trying a cup of tea. Zero calories (assuming no honey or other additives) and there are several caffeinated teas out there that could deliver a little pick me up for fewer calories with the bonus of skipping the inevitable sugar crash. Oh, but you say it’s the carbonation that you cannot part with? In that case, try sparkling water. You could go straight up mineral water, but there are all kinds of flavored options to choose from if plain is not your preference. And if it is BOTH the caffeine and the carbonation you are after, there are even caffeine-filled sparkling waters on the market to quench that thirst without the calories and sugar.
That is just one small habit to adjust. Now let’s say you slay it for a week or two…time to add something else. Perhaps that something else is going out for a brisk afternoon walk. Even 10 minutes can elevate your heart rate a bit and help clear your head. Promise yourself you will get out for a walk once a week. Once that starts to feel good, make it two days a week and so on.
The point here is that you don’t necessarily need a major overhaul to lead a healthier lifestyle. A series of small, intentional changes over time can add up to something spectacular. So, what are you waiting for?
