This next one is a little ominous and disturbingly plausible. The thing about inventions that backfire is that you usually don’t know what a bad idea they are until much later, after the damage is already done and after the invention is widespread and hard to get rid of.

We never would have put asbestos in buildings if we knew what a bad idea it was, after all. There was a time when doctors thought smoking was fine and when radiation was used in health treatments. Who knows what we’re doing that seems like a terrific idea now but that we are going to realize later is terrible?
