We know it’s August, but we’ve been daydreaming about fall arriving for months at this point. And sure we love trips to the pumpkin patches and apple orchards and getting to wear sweaters and eating soup and sitting out in the crisp autumn air, but you know what we really love? Making our house cozy. There is nothing better than settling in for a Halloween movie night (so what if it’s September?) surrounded by all things cozy in a home that smells like you live in an actual pumpkin marshmallow. We’ve created a little guide just to ensure you don’t miss a beat. Let’s get started!
Let’s face it if your home smells good not only is it inviting to guests, but it will make everyone that lives inside of the house feel extra cozy too, especially when the candle scents change to fall scents. Now, we get it, not every girl is a pumpkin spice girl and that’s okay! There are a ton of other scents to choose from like carrot cake, pecan pie, or even cashmere.
With fall here (okay, not here, but close) you’ll want a little blanket action to throw over you in the evenings when the windows are open and the crisp fall air is pouring in. With that being said, have your coziest blankets (tastefully) strewn about your house. You can do this by rolling them up and having them displayed in a basket, nicely folded on a blanket ladder, or even having a stack of nicely folded blankets sitting in the corner. Just don’t forget to put your favorite one over the back of the couch so you can always grab it when you need to.
Making your coffee table seasonal is a must, and you can do this in a couple of really easy ways. Swap out any summer florals you have for fall, yes, even fake ones, get a couple of fall-themed coffee table books such as The Colors of Fall: A Celebration of New England’s Foliage Season By Jerry and March Monkman or a spooky coffee table book like Stephen King’s Creepshow, your coffee table is also a great place for one of those fall candles, and last, but certainly not least, some seasonal candy. Even if you’re normal and hate candy corn, the pumpkin candy corn in a fall or Halloween candy dish looks good on a table.
If you’ve got a mantle or some type of shelving or both, these are excellent places to spread holiday cheer and warmth. (This is also where that Target Dollar Spot comes into play!) Nab some pumpkins, autumnal garland, string lights, spooky books, or fall flowers to put in these areas!
If you have art on your walls, switch it out for pieces that have warmer tones to them or even some that are relevant to the season like gorgeous fall landscapes, or if you’re really into spooky season, old horror book covers, or movie posters. If you’re more of a typography person, Pinterest has a ton of free printables you can print and frame for just the price of some thrift store frames.
If you don’t already have rugs, consider them just for the fall and winter months. Rugs will instantly add a level of coziness you never knew before.
Don’t forget the outside of your house too! Pumpkins, mums, cornstalks, antique trunks, rocking chairs, blankets, and a giant skeleton! Whew, sorry, but you get the gest. (Don’t forget the fall-themed welcome mat!)
