Wooden Spoon to the Rescue
You’ve probably read somewhere on Reddit or the YouTube comments section that placing a wooden spoon on top of a pot of boiling water will stop it from boiling over. This common kitchen hack is both true and untrue. It’s true that wooden spoons are slightly hydrophobic, and bubbles will pop instantly upon contact with the utensil.
However, a pot of water that’s boiling violently will only come creeping out of the sides of the pot. So, if your recipe calls for boiling the heck out of a pot of water, just use a stockpot that’s about six inches taller than however much water the recipe calls for.
