Theory and Practice
Tile layouts can be an easy way to spice up any space. If you don’t do anything too outlandish, you can get a really classy effect going. The designer of this space had the right idea. Black and white, like a chessboard, is not a bad look to go for. There’s a problem in practice here though.

Looking at these steps from an angle, they’re quite easy to see, especially when you’re at the bottom of them. But when you’re going down them, it’s clear what the problem is. They blend in way too well with one another, to a point where you basically can’t see where the stair end and the floor begins. I’m sure the number of accidents is in double digits.
