Lighting is everything when it comes to having a home that is comfy and cozy. And functional, of course. What we often overlook is how much lighting can reflect our personal style and we don’t know about you, but we want our home to be as “us” as possible. So, if you’re like us and will do anything to avoid unflattering overhead lighting and, you know, have great taste, then check out this little guide we’ve put together of alternative lighting options.
Table Lamps
Table lamps double as decor and you can’t change our minds. Lamps come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles so we promise there is one out there that is sure to fit both your needs and your style.
Floor Lamps
If you aren’t working with a lot of tables, or you’re needing a little more light than a table lamp can give, consider a floor lamp. These fit great in corners of rooms and are capable of really brightening a space up. What we love most about floor lamps is that lampshades and bases can be as minimal or as extravagant as you like, so your lamp can blend in or stand out as much as you need it to.
Wall Sconces
If you’re looking for a light source that’s a little more out of the way, consider wall sconces. These can be installed directly into your wall and the sconces themselves can be elegant and over the top or sleek and modern, but you can also have fun with the kind of lightbulb you use, they are on display after all.
Electric Lantern
If you’re going for a rustic or even colonial look, electric lanterns may be just what you’re looking for. Sure, they may be small, but they can add a ton of light and character to a room. Since a lot of them run on a battery, they can also be moved around easily since you don’t have to worry about an outlet being nearby.
Chandeliers
Okay, we know that this probably falls under the category of overhead lighting, but trust us, it’s different. Chandeliers are elegant, and tasteful, and give off a much more sophisticated ambiance. If you’re on the hunt for overhead lighting, but don’t want overhead lighting, we highly recommend considering a chandelier.
Natural
If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient way to brighten up your home, consider opening the curtains and letting in all the natural light. If your neighbors are a little too close to you, frosted windows or sheer curtains can provide you with just the right amount of privacy.
